Ryan Gosling is headed to a galaxy far, far away in an all-new Star Wars adventure.

The Barbie star is teaming up with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy for Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2027. Production begins this fall.

Set about five years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the film will be a standalone story, separate from the Skywalker saga. According to Lucasfilm, it will introduce brand-new characters and take place in a time period never before explored on screen.

The news was revealed during Star Wars Celebration in Japan, where fans were treated to a nostalgic moment: a childhood photo of Gosling’s Star Wars-themed bedsheets. Gosling shared that he was dreaming of Star Wars even before watching it, saying, “It’s always been there… it framed my idea of what a movie even was.”

Praising the script, Gosling said the story is packed with heart, adventure, and original characters, offering fans a fresh look at the Star Wars universe.

Levy echoed the excitement, saying the film will capture the classic fun of Star Wars but in a bold, new direction. “It’s intimidating to take on something so beloved,” he admitted. “But with this story and collaboration, we feel we can get it right.”

Since Disney acquired Star Wars in 2012, the franchise has rapidly grown, with annual film releases from 2015 to 2019 and several Disney+ spin-offs like The Mandalorian, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Next up before Starfighter lands: The Mandalorian & Grogu, hitting theaters in May 2026.
